PGA Corner

Hold on to your visors, folks, another thrilling weekend of golf is in the books!

Tony Finau has emerged victorious at the 2023 Mexico Open. And what a shocker it was! Finau, who has been known to choke in big moments, managed to put together an impressive final round of 66 - his worst score of the week - to secure his sixth career PGA Tour win.

Sure, the field wasn't exactly stacked, but Finau still had to deal with Jon Rahm, the world number one who brought his A game and ended up a distant three shots behind Finau. And let's not forget about Brandon Wu, last year's runner-up, who finished in a very respectable second-to-last place 👀

Meanwhile, we had some other notable finishes, including Akshay Bhatia, who chose to skip college in favor of turning pro at age 17. Who needs an education when you can make birdies, am I right?

And don't even get me started on Eric Cole, Cameron Champ, and Jimmy Walker. They may have finished in the top 15, but let's be real - they're not exactly household names.

But fear not, my golf-loving friends, because next week we have the Wells Fargo Championship at Quail Hollow Golf Club. And let me tell you, this tournament is one of the PGA Tour's new Designated Events, which means the field is stacked and the purse is massive. So get ready to watch Rory McIlroy, Viktor Hovland, Collin Morikawa, Jordan Spieth, and Justin Thomas battle it out for a paycheck that could probably feed a small country. Can't wait!

Tony Finau: What Is In The Bag?

LIV-ing La Vida Loca

Talor Gooch might not be able to rank up on the World Golf Ranking system while playing on LIV Golf, but who cares when you're cashing in big cheques? After winning his second consecutive trophy, he's raked in over US$8 million in the past fortnight. Even though LIV events don't receive points on the Official World Golf Ranking system, Gooch's RangeGoats team won the team event, and he's now LIV's first back-to-back champion.

His team captain, Bubba Watson, jokingly teased Gooch about losing more ranking points this week, but who needs rankings when you're swimming in cash?

In the end, Gooch beat Sergio Garcia in a play-off, thanks to his aggressive drive and a bit of good luck. The Spaniard's third shot landed in the bunker, and after failing to hole his birdie chip, Gooch hugged his Australian caddie and celebrated his victory.

Sure, Gooch dropped two spots on the World Golf Ranking system, but who cares when you're playing with some of the greatest golfers of this generation and making millions? The Singapore leg of the Saudi-backed breakaway league might not receive world ranking points, but it's all good as long as the cheques keep coming.
